... Why is it, may I ask, that it is culturally cool and acceptable and not even mildly surprising for this photograph [of two members of the US women's Olympic Beach Volleyball team in horizontal full-body contact] to be so popular, and yet the idea that women like male/male slash is so shocking?

Not a particularly new topic, but it got a lot of replies, and I read... most of them, probably.
