Chris Weitz on adapting Philip Pullman's trilogy for the screen (thanks to Kia for the link).

I have to say, I'm really, really bloody impressed.

Thanks for this link! I started skimming skeptically and found myself drawn in. The man is very articulate and I like his commitment to backing away from the CGI-topheaviness of Lotr (that was already starting to pall by RotK, I thought). He's got a good attitude. Though I'm still wary of seeing a film version of DArk Materials because it lives so vividly in my head and I don't want someone else's pictures usurping my own. I may send the children with their father.

Yes, me too. I really like his attitude to the whole project, especially about the CGI.

Yes, I know what you mean. But I think I'm going to be too intrigued by the whole thing not to see it. Did you happen to catch the radio adaptation on Radio 4? I thought it was really quite bad, actually.

I think so, he sounds like he wants to leave in as much as possible, and says no characters have been cut at all so far. I look forward to seeing how they turn out! :)

seconding (or is it thirding) the thanks for the link. I have to say this looks *really* promising - I like his bg in English Lit and he just sounds down to earth and sensible about the whole thing. Phew.

The only thing I'm wondering is how long it's going to take for someone to pick up the DiR series and run with it - the books are so short, it would seem fairly ideal to convert them into maybe a movie trilogy. Oh well, I live in hope.

Ah, that's one of those things - on the one hand, it would be so cool! On the other, I don't think I could bear it...

I was really against a film being made of HDM, I couldn't see how it could work. But I feel more hopeful now I've read this article.

Yes, that's exactly how I felt. I was very sceptical, but this guy does seem more than capable. I'm really intrigued to see how the film(s) turn out.
