I read through this story and began reading the comments before I realized it was written just after Small Worlds first aired. I was astounded by how true it continues to ring.

This story fits plausibly, almost seamlessly, before Countrycide, and Jack's characterization agrees with what we've since seen of his past. He wanted to belong to people, and made promises to them that he was forced to break because of circumstances he couldn't control. It's heartbreaking that he feels the need to absolve himself, and still seems unconvinced that he deserves absolution.

Oh, thank you! I'm so pleased to think this story still reads well, after everything we've seen since from the show. :)
