While I'm no expert, I'd venture to suggest that it might be a bit early to write off the Large Hadron Collider (which you describe as 'a machine that goes in circles) as a 'big waste of money' purely because you haven't noticed it doing anything yet. Similarly, I'm not sure why some of you seem to think it's a failure because the world hasn't ended after all. That wasn't actually the point of the experiment.

I am quite annoyed the world has not ended. I have been putting off doing any work for a number of weeks on the grounds that the world was going to end anyway, and now what excuse do I have?

Fail, it's everywhere. Someone on the BBC said basic research to applied and practical application research. They said said practical research wouldn't make the imaginative links, think out of the box, like the move from the candle to the invention of the electric lightbulb. As if.
