Spelling

I wasn't going to post anything at all about the bloody Ross/Brand debacle, but I cannot contain myself any longer. I'm sorry, guys.

Jonathan

Russell

Thank you for listening. Goodnight!

I feel so stupid.
Does the a and l have significance?

[identity profile] sheldrake.livejournal.com 2008-11-01 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry! :) I've obviously read far too much about this on the tinternets because I've noticed a marked tendency to spell the names 'Jonathon' and 'Russel'. I was getting twitchy.

[identity profile] trianne.livejournal.com 2008-11-01 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Ah!
*is relieved*
*tries to come up with something witty relating to birds (ducks) and twitchy (twitching) and failing miserably*

Never try to be witty after midnight, it's extremely dangerous and tiring. I avoid it at all costs myself.

[identity profile] trianne.livejournal.com 2008-11-01 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Even before midnight for some of us...

Ooooerr

I know I keep spelling Jonathan as Jonathon because I had a friend who did. Ooops.

Did I do Russel as well?

Heeee, sorry, I have a latent spelling nazi inside me. ;) Don't worry, you're not the only one.

I know I keep spelling Jonathan as Jonathon because I had a friend who did.

I think that's why everyone does it. So many people spell it this way I was starting to wonder if I was right!

No, all the Russels were people I don't know. That one's been bugging me for ages. I used to think it was mainly Americans, which turns out to be horribly prejucided of me because now lots of British spellers are doing it all over the comments sections of the newspapers. Which I must henceforth stop reading as I'm tired of the whole thing!

You know, I was just having a nice afternoon nap and I got woken up by a woman on the phone telling me I'd won up to £1,500 of home improvements, and would I be spending it on "windows, or perhaps doors?" Then when I said I wasn't interested, she put the phone down without another word! That's put me all out of sorts.

*Hear Hear*

This is something I have noticed too, and grimaced each time I saw those names spelt like that :D

[identity profile] sheldrake.livejournal.com 2008-11-01 09:48 am (UTC)(link)
It's probably my own fault for reading way too much about the whole affair for my own good...

[identity profile] yellow-oranges.livejournal.com 2008-11-01 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
too much about the whole affair

omg wha' happened? I thought Ross was always a cheerleader for Brand?

[identity profile] sheldrake.livejournal.com 2008-11-01 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah... unfortunately on this occasion he, er, did a bit too much cheeleading.

And this happened.

YES, god. THAT IS NOT HARD, PEOPLE.

[identity profile] sheldrake.livejournal.com 2008-11-01 09:52 am (UTC)(link)
Jonathon for Jonathan seems a very common mistake, I think the brain somehow feels it's wrong to have the vowels go o a a, when they should obviously go o a o. Or something. And a similar thing with Russell - "Two Ls as well as two Ss? Are you sure??"

But my brain is contractually obliged to point out spelling mistakes and annoy people. :)

[identity profile] lobelia321.livejournal.com 2008-11-02 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Um. I'm not getting it. There seems to be puzzle here, based on the letters in bold? But I'm still not getting it.

*dumb and dumber*

[identity profile] lobelia321.livejournal.com 2008-11-02 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
Oh. I just read the comments.

This is about SPELLING!!

I have a student who spells herself 'Nikkii'. I have students who spell themselves 'Rachael' or 'Micheal'. It is all very not-in-the-bible'ish.

[identity profile] sheldrake.livejournal.com 2008-11-02 10:52 am (UTC)(link)
Does nobody read subject lines any more? ;)

[identity profile] purple-hazed.livejournal.com 2008-11-02 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
I am sure I have spelled these wrong occasionally, but I plea low grade dyslexia (otherwise known as stupidity)

[identity profile] sheldrake.livejournal.com 2008-11-02 10:52 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah but you can add up, which is also a useful skill for everyday life, and one I have never actually mastered.

[identity profile] purple-hazed.livejournal.com 2008-11-03 05:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I like adding things up!! Sometimes I count things that don't need counting!

I've seen Russell Crowe spelt with only one l many many times. And you wouldn't believe the many ways you can misspell Kenneth Branagh! Keneth Branaugh I think was my favourite...

[identity profile] sheldrake.livejournal.com 2008-11-02 10:51 am (UTC)(link)
What is it with the one l? It's so common!

I understand the Jonathan one, mostly because I did it myself. Hee! But anyone who misspells Russell should be smacked quite hard on the back of the thigh.

Spelling hell is reserved for Barratt/Barrett.

[identity profile] sheldrake.livejournal.com 2008-11-02 10:50 am (UTC)(link)
Secretly, I believe it ought to be spelt Jonathon.
