Hmm, bit of a stressful week, what with one thing and another. I think we're about to go to war with the subeditors. Hooray for the weekend!
I should never go on the internet really. Now I'm actively aware that some people think the film of The Neverending Story is better than the book, and that makes me sad. Maybe you do too. If so, do me a favour and don't tell me about it? I'm tired of arguing. (Er, not about that, about some other things. There has been a huge debate raging all week about whether we should go to a meeting or not. We even had a meeting to discuss it. In the end, the decision was reached not to go to the meeting.)
Ok, I haven't actually seen the film and never intend to, but I don't care. The book is still better. So there.
When I feel fed up at work, I have a picture of a mole rising up out of the soil that I keep in a folder on my desktop, and I look at it and cheer up.* Other things that work - koala, skunk, hedgehog, armadillo, echidna. Rabbits, sometimes - the one in my icon is a case in point. I would want a pet mole, but moles really don't like being pets. Also, I don't really do pets. Plants cause me enough angst as it is.
I'm wondering whether to have proper dinner, but I can't be bothered really. This is most unusual for me. Dinner is generally the high point of my day.
I am going away now.
* I realise this is a badly-constructed sentence, but you should be aware that the picture is on my desktop, not the soil.

On the other hand, I should probably tell you I didn't even want to see the film because the dragon looked like a fluffy dog.

also: this (http://pics.livejournal.com/anatsuno/gallery/000356ax) might help you in time of hardship and fedupness; like the mole picture. maybe!

Awesome gallery of cuteness, too. ;)

OMG
REALLY.
I've never gotten over it. What a criminal thing to do.
Re: OMG
(er... who said that, btw?)

This is called Die unendliche Geschichte in German, was a huge hit novel there, and was written by my father's close friend Michael Ende who very sadly died a few years ago. I read this book when it was still in unbound form in Michael Ende's house near Rome back in the 70s and was so rivetted that, even when there was an electricity black-out, I kept on going with a candle until 2 in the morning. I haven't re-read since and am thus not sure whether it will stand the test of time.
My absolute favouritest book by Michael Ende is Jim Knopf, one of the best children's book ever and a true classic and tighter and more fabulous than Neverending Story. It's not known in the English-speaking world at all but it was once translated as Jim Button and Luke the Engine Driver and I don't know what they called volume 2 but it's called Jim Button and the Wild Thirteen, and the Wild 13 (die Wilde Dreizehn) are the chaps in my icon.
Whee!!!
Michael Ende hated the film of the book Neverending Story so much that he went to court about it and tried to sue them and lost phenomenal amounts of money. He refused to have his name displayed in the credits (I never checked to see whether his name is actually missing).

I didn't know that about him trying to sue though - how sad. It's a bit like Ursula Le Guin and the awful Earthsea adaptation... it's the sort of thing that often seems to happen to children's/fantasy books, for some reason.
I have reread the book a few times, although not recently, and I do think it stands up - I'm very fond of it.
I wonder if the other book you mention is available anywhere? I shall have to have a look.

Clearly, the only solution is: Learn German and get it for a fiver.

I just had to comment on TNES. I saw the movie first, and liked it. I later read the book and adored it: it became and stayed for a while my instant favorite. I lost respect for the movie after reading the book. There are a few bits of the movie that are impressive (some of the special effects, for its time), but it is overall a sad sad attempt at bringing the book to film, imho.
