Get a Mac, they're shiny and beautiful. Do you really want a clunky grey box the same as every other clunky grey box? No? Well, you could always get a Dell instead I suppose, they're clunky black boxes instead...

What do you want to use this computer for, beyond writing a novel next month and websurfing?

Mac vote number two... nope - not quite convinced yet.

Uses - writing the novel next month, websurfing, making icons, crappy amateur web design, pretending to learn graphics programs and write stuff, whilst actually refreshing Friends page every five minutes. That about covers it.

MS Word is exactly the same on a Mac.
Web browsers are the same.
Photoshop/ImageReady is basically the same, you just have an Apple key insead of Alt, as far as I can tell.
If you're coding more-or-less by hand, it's still the same, although I admit that my recent acquisition of a new-and-shiny html editor hasn't inspired me to actually put together the page that I've been meaning to do since June.

Ok, so they're slightly expensive. But I've got my overdraft paid off only six months after I got my iBook... :)
Sorry, I have all the evangelism of the newly-converted! But really, unless you're using really complicated and PC-specific software, the 'relearning' argument doesn't work, I've used PCs for ten years and a Mac for six months and I'm just as much at home on either. I just prefer the Mac :) although I do have a three-button mouse, which some people might think of as cheating.

Thanks for this, the info's actually really useful. I'm not anti-Mac as such, I would like to have one at some point. But I think the expense issue's going to win out, because I'm kind of spending someone else's money... Still -- I'll be rich and famous one day, right!?

I don't know [livejournal.com profile] kiltsandlollies but she is proof that there is at least one person out there who doesn't like Mac OS X... aah well, I never knew it was hated by anyone...

Obviously, you will have to write the novel in order to become rich and famous, this catch-22 thing of not having anything to write it on would be a wee bit annoying though so I guess you'll have to go for a PC, in which case I merely wish you the best of luck unless you decide to get a Mac instead and happen to want Office v.X and Photoshop 7.

I'm sure that sentence should have had some more punctuation, possibly including a few full stops or something. Oh well, I'm not sure where I left them.
