I have realised that my forte, when it comes to the old knitting, is not actually in finishing things. In fact, I have no forte, because I'm not actually that good at it, but I do enjoy it. What I mainly like, though, is starting things. The rest I can take or leave.

Trouble is, though, I'm quite rubbish at reading patterns, or indeed instructions of any kind. Take tonight, for instance. The pattern said 'garter stitch' so I went and happily knitted 7 rows of stocking stitch. That took me half an hour! (They were long rows, all right.) I know this, because the podcast of Russell Brand's BBC 6 radio show is half an hour long, and at the end of that is when I realised I was going to have to rip the whole thing back and start again. Yes, all right, it's only seven rows. But that was half an hour out of my day! I don't have many half hours in the day that aren't taken up with trying really hard not to kick C the typist in the head. See?

I think that I'm pretty much perfectly fine with Billie Piper leaving Doctor Who at the end of this series (I typed all that the first time round using the word 'season'. Fandom is an Americany place sometimes). I do like Rose, but ... hmm. Last series I really liked Rose. Aw, I would have been sad, I would. Now, I'm all, ok. Fun to see what happens next! Interesting. I suppose I was a bit shippy about Rose and Nine, not to mention kind of weird and obsessed generally, but now... perhaps I'm just back to default Doctor Who enjoyment mode. Or something. And that's good. Oh, but I forgot! I suddenly realised - does that mean no Jackie? *whimper* And to think, I didn't even like Jackie to start with. Perhaps she'll be the new companion, haha? Also, of course Rose isn't going to die. That would be ridiculous. She will go home and be happy and fulfilled or I shall be very cross!

You must forgive me, I didn't read any of that back to myself, so it probably makes no sense.

Other things: no other things as they would all be whiney and boring.

I feel like you about Rose. I kind of feel if she goes we can go back to it being about the Doctor. And I like that. :)

Hi, Duckie! I am baking bread!! Go me. the cottage loaf is currently proving before I assemble it and give it its final rise. My wrists hurt, though, due to the pounding I had to give the dough. heh

Yes, yes! It is, after all, called Doctor Who. And the Doctor is fab and lovely and deserves to be the star of his own show, so there. Not that I don't like Rose, as I say; I think Billie's been great, and I liked how they used her as a way in for people who didn't know what the hell this Doctor Who thing was about anyway. I thought that worked. But perhaps it's run its course. I want to see the Doctor interacting with new people, new companions! Exciting! :)

Bread is cool. Can you make me some sandwiches?

New companion indeed!! How about a tall, blonde, cat-loving, fortysomething librarian?

Works for me.

sorry to break this to you laz, but i think a thirtysomething black-haired artist type with a shoe fetish is actually what the doctor is looking for. teehee.

yay ducks!

No! No! No! I'll think you'll find that my suggestion is far more in keeping with the ethos of the current Doctor Who writers. Artistic black-haired shoe fetishists are so passe darlink.

Hm. I'm sensing a theme here!

i totally agree. that sounds like the kind of companion the doctor really needs. ...my hair is SO black.

yay gerhl! yay ducks!

I know how you feel. I once did a whole bunch of rows on a hook rug before I realized I was a box off on the pattern...and decided to leave it that way. It didn't look half bad, though. If you didn't stand too close to it. :)

And you are NOT crap at knitting and I have proof!!

Aw, you are kind. :) I am a lazy knitter though - not in any way shape or form a perfectionist!

OMG they need a new companion. I'm thinking a 26-year-old English teacher who spends more time on the internet than is strictly healthy. (coff).

I will not miss Rose. We don't like her.

I like Rose, but I liked her more last series.

Personally, I think they need someone a bit older, perhaps sort of early thirties-ish... someone with a hellish job in agricultural magazine design? Who knits? I dunno, it's just a thought.

Course, I'm assuming here that Doctor Who is a documentary. It is, isn't it?

As if they could make that stuff up! It's too crazy not to be real! Actually I think he could do with a harem gang of companions who sort of rotate. You know, to share skills. And that.

We need a cute boy companion!

I think that would be lovely!

Ooh! How cool would Elijah be as a companion? Glee! (Or have I had too much of this half a glass of wine...)

Actually, I totally thought that when I first heard the news. Old habits die hard.

Rose was written better last series. I think it's time for her to be off. If she dies heroically, I will be annoyed.

How about 2 companions? Adds an extra level of banter.

Two companions, yes! I think that would be perfect.

I did not see the last two episodes of Dr W but I taped them. Now, however, I never have time to watch them as there is always some football match on! And I am compelled to see them all! I have to stop myself from going to the TV or radio at 2 in the afternoon because, after all, I have a book to write et cetera...

Now: beginnings! You are good at beginnings! Have you ever read Italo Calvino's 'If on a winter's night a traveller'? (One of my top ten favouritest novels) It is a book of ten chapters, and each chapter is a beginning; there are no endings! This is the type of fic for you!!!

*looks extremely helpful and somewhat desperate for Shelfic*

AHA! Revelation! Of course, my attitude to knitting entirely mirrors my attitude to writing! I have SO MANY beginnings! Sadly I am not Italo Calvino... (whom I have not read, but surely must).

Hmm. And I was looking at my Carson Beckett fic the other day, it's not bad! Just really really not finished...

duckie read calvino yes. if on a winter's night and invisible cities. lobe disagrees with me on cities but i think it might make your ears pointy with joy. ... or, maybe not.

how's your dream-story going then?

posted by [identity profile] sheldrake.livejournal.com at 10:24am on 17/06/2006
*looks sheepish* Um? It's not? Trouble is, I don't think I care about those characters very much, because I can't be bothered to stick with them. I think I brought them into existence purely so I could muck about writing in some sort of postwar villagey 'voice'. Or something.

*puts calvino on list*

Am I alone in not wanting Rose to go? I love her to bits and actually prefer her in THIS series to the last one.

However, how about a companion who looks a bit like Brenda the redhead from those paper towel adverts? (That fringe is a mistake on Brenda's part.)

Poor Rose.

No, I still really like Rose, and I think she's been fantastic! And I'd love it if she ever came back.

But if she's going, I'd like someone quite different next. I was thinking, there are loads of characters from the last two series who'd be really interesting if they were to come back. But I've been seeing rumours of various ex-East Enders and Hollyoaks actresses who, nowt wrong with them, but they all seem a bit like... well, Rose. Seems a bit unimaginative. I mean, I know the default for companion is probably 'pretty young girl' but I suppose I expected a bit more from them.

Also, they'd really, really better not kill her. They wouldn't though, would they? I want to see her go back to Jackie with lots of ideas about how to make the world a better place. And maybe go around investigating things with Sarah Jane like in [livejournal.com profile] doyle_sb4's Envy, Content and Sufficient Champagne.
